Logan - A deeper message

Logan came out a couple of months back and if we look deeper, there's something interesting that can be found. For this theory to be true, I'm going to proceed with the assumption that Logan takes place in the universe where the sentinels were stopped from coming into existence because of what Raven did in X-Men Days Of Future Past. So basically, it takes place a few years after the ending of Days Of Future Past.

The following theory contains spoilers from X-Men Days Of Future Past and Logan, so now that you've been warned, lets get started. Lets get back to that scene in DOFP where Charles is convinced by Logan that he should search for Raven and try using Cerebro for it. Charles fails the first time because he says that he's heartbroken and can't do it again. He displays fear and anxiety and feels like one of his own students who come to him for help. Logan tells him that he can't do anything about it and so asks him to look beyond the future where Charles meets future Charles. So future Charles comes up with an excellent solution. He tells current Charles that he needs to hope again and that he needs to embrace his pain which would ultimately make him stronger than he could ever imagine. The entire sequence was so inspiring and beautifully taken but once again, just like all other successful movies uses hope as its main theme, something which never fails to win the hearts of critics and audiences.

A few moments later, Hank (beast) tells them that the president is going to make some announcement with Bolivar Trask the next day. Charles fears that Raven killing Trask in an event like that could lead to all out war beteen the mutants and humans. Logan also feels that this event would only make things worse than they already are. Hank tells them that there is a theory in quantum physics, that time is immutable. He says that time is like a river, we can throw stones at it creating ripples but eventually, the current would always correct itself. In other words he believes that maybe that's who Raven really is. Charles disagrees with him saying that he doesn't believe in that theory and that just because someone stumbles, loses their way, doesn't mean they're lost forever. Eventually things turn out well for them and they stop Raven from killing Trask and the sentinels are prevented from coming into existence.

But lets consider the river to be 'mutant extinction' in general. Sentinels were just a means to achieve this feat. In Logan, Charles  confessed that he did something unspeakable in Westchester, the home of the mutants and that he didn't deserve a peaceful night's sleep. He was reminded of s massacre from the past because of another seizure he had that day hurting a lot of people around him. His seizures lead to some kind of respiratory paralysis to eveyone around him. From what he said its pretty clear that just like the seizure he had that day, Charles had a previous episode of a more severe attack which lead to the death of every single mutant around him. Ironically, the saviour and well-wisher of all the mutants also became the murderer of every single one of them. Logan is clearly the mother of all dark superhero films. Since Logan was the only one of the mutants strong enough to withstand the attack he's still alive keeping Charles in an isolatd area waiting for Charles and himself to die. He even has an Adamantium bullet with him so that he could commit suicide when he wants. Let me also add a word on Caliban, he was potrayed as a tracker who works for money in X-Men Apocalypse and the reason he's alive is because he was not a part of Xavier's school for the gifted.

Towards the end, Charles is murdered by X-24 and so is Logan. Logan becomes the last mutant and dies holding Laura's hand. Going by Hank's theory, the river being mutant extinction the ripples they created by preventing the existence of sentinels might have bought them some time but every single mutant in the X-Men universe has been wiped out by their so called saviour Charles Xavier and Logan, murdered by X-24. The river has indeed corrected itself and time is still the winner. So be it sentinels or Charles himself, there is nothing that anyone could have done to prevent mutant extinction. Of course we can still argue that there are new mutants but they're all artificial ones who came into existence by genetic engineering.

So the X-Men universe chose reality over fantasy with Logan, keeping all that hope and ispiration stuff aside and choosing to embrace reality no matter how dark it is and I applaud them for that. All this is true if the Logan universe took place in the period after the ending of X-Men Days Of Future part.
