JL Episode 2- Wonder Woman

Wonder Woman, also known as Diana Prince is one of the most powerful Amazon warriors. She hails from this hidden island known as Themiscyra populated by other Amazonian women. She is the third most popular DC character after Batman and Superman.

My first introduction to Wonder Woman was from the Justice League unlimited TV show where she had a major role to play. She leads the Justice League along with Batman and Superman and very often saves the league in critical situations. Her weapon of choice is her lasso of truth, a magic rope which when tied around a person, makes them spill out the truth.

She brings to the league order, kindness, affection and other human characters, which are very rare to be found in Bruce and Clark. These characters which she has makes the rest of the members feel right at home. I love the dynamic between Flash and Diana in the animated series. In their first introduction, Flash tries to flirt with Diana, but with time, the way their dynamic evolves is really mature.

Diana Prince has a slightly gentler childhood than usual superheroes, she's the daughter of Hippolyta, brought to life by Zeus and grows up in an environment filled with women. There is no tragic death of parents or major catastrophe in her childhood, probably the reason for her kindness and love towards everyone. The animated series takes a path where Diana falls for Bruce, where Bruce constantly turns her down quoting that he has a strict policy against dating members of the league. At the same time, there is still a soft corner for Diana in his heart.

Over the years, Wonder Woman has been depicted in various comic books, animated movies, the TV show starring Lynda Carter and more recently, Gal Gadot's take on the character which was a huge hit among fans and critics.

I'd like to end this short article by talking about her role in the DCEU. Gal Gadot signed in to play With Wonder Woman a few years back and it has been nothing short of extraordinary for the character. One of the best parts about the critically handicapped Batman V Superman was her introduction towards the end. She has been shown as an extremely strong, battle-trained warrior, who could even take on Superman and overpower him in battle. The DCEU hasn't tried anything with her invisible jet which I think is a good decision so far because it might appear silly in an age of hulkbuster suits and high tech bat-gadgets.

Patty Jenkins did a great job with her Wonder Woman movie which lead to great praise for the DCEU and has saved the DCEU from the critics. People are starting to pay attention to this universe and to Wonder Woman as a character. Halloween costumes are selling out, cosplayers are getting their chances to shine and more importantly, little kids get to grow up with a strong, independent, stoic, affectionate warrior. At an age where feminism is becoming a very conflicting topic for discussion, it was the perfect time to release a movie like this, and what I loved most was the fact that it didn't even bother trying to convey that women are better than men, it made every single woman feel her emotions, relate to her and cheer her when she started taking bad guys down. Hopefully, Justice League continues to do the same.

As a fan of all her depictions, Wonder Woman is a very important character for me. I've looked up to her ever since I was a little kid and I've learned that it's not enough to be strong and powerful if you don't have a heart. If Superman stands for hope and Batman stands for justice and instilling fear among those who prey on the fearful, then Wonder Woman to me stands for love, respect, order, and peace. I will continue to look up to the character like I have always and I can't wait to see what they've done with her in Justice League. Hopefully, the Wonder Woman movie has guided the DCEU in the right direction.

Diana knows that there is so much that is wrong with the world and that people sometimes don't deserve saving. She believes that there's both good and bad in people and that the right person will bring out the good in you, defeating the evil within you. In spite of the harsh reality, she is ready to go on a journey to save the world because of her love for humanity and that is what separates her from the rest of the superheroes and probably the best part about her.

Favourite iteration: Wonder Woman (2017)

Favorite quote: It's not about what you deserve, it's about what you believe, and I believe in them (people). Only love can save the world.
